Antique Confetti Style Staffordshire Poodles

Procured from the estate of collectors of fine antiques, this pair of separated leg confetti style poodles makes for a special  and unique collector piece. Potters would achieve this”curly” coat from an application of crushed up slip that had been pushed through a sieve onto the glazed surface of the poodle. Here we have a pair of dogs, about 8.25 inches tall, with a faint “Made in England” factory mark on the bottom under a felt piece placed along the bottom to protect your furniture tops. This indicates that they were created at least post 1890 as new legislation in the US passed in 1891 required that products being imported into the United States must be marked with their country of origin. This pup is therefore aged anywhere from a later Victorian piece to the mid 20th century.

There are areas where the “curls” are more sparse or a spot of discoloration to the slip, and some crazing to the glaze, with one large poodle having a faint radial hairline to back and haunch. There are some small chips to the paint on the nose and feet, consistent with age. This pair retains a well painted face with beautiful luster colors and locks. You will note the small firing hole on the bottoms of the poodles, and on the underside of each you will find the “Made in England” factory marks mentioned previously. There are also remaining fibers and pieces from a felt bottom that is no longer fully attached. One dog also appears to have a rattle likely from dislodged ceramic inside of the cast.

Each dog in this pair is approximately 8.25 inches tall, 5 inches long, and about 3 inches wide. This set is a nicely weighted pair at about 3.9 lbs.
