This fun pair of Staffordshire Mantel Dogs are the perfect size to fit into a tight spot, like on a bar cart or coffee table! Although these were procured from the estate of collectors of fine antiques, these pups are likely vintage reproductions of an older, genuine set of 19th century antiques due to the factory mark on the bottom of the dogs which reads “Made in England”. This indicates that they were created at least post 1890 as new legislation in the US passed in 1891 required that products being imported into the United States must be marked with their country of origin. They have been reproduced from a style that utilized bright gold embellishments, meaning the original would have been from around 1860 to 1875. Even though they are likely reproductions, the individuality of their hand painted markings do seem to indicate these are still an early 19th century set and a great collector’s piece!
These dogs are in very good condition with the gilt in good condition, paint intact on their faces, etc. There little firing holes behind the ears on each, as well as the holes in the bottoms. Please inspect the listing photos closely for further details on the condition of these pieces.
Each dog is about 7 inches tall, 5.5 inches long, and 2 inches wide. This set weighs about 2 lbs.
