Details: Acquired from someone who claims it was a family piece, owned by an early relative who lived in Boston in the late 1800s-very early 1900s and likely acquired the pieces from the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, Italy in the 1800s (see the ‘Napoli’ carvings). Their family member then kept these stone bust pieces in what appears to be a velvet and silk lined case labeled (____) EPSON 330 Washington St. Boston. The longest piece is 4 inches, the bust of the woman is approximately 3 inches, and the helmeted man is also approximately 3 inches long. They come in the case which is approximately 6.25 inches by 2.5 inches.
Condition: The individual stone pieces are in excellent antique condition with signs of scratches from their creation (carved stone). The case itself is unrelated to the items and does show signs of age, as well as spots and discoloration, but does clasp and close. Please inspect the listing photos closely for further condition details. Note that the piece with the man wearing a helmet has a hole carved/scooped out of the center, possibly so it could have been used as a pen.
Suggested Use: Actual use unknown, though it was suggested that they could have been decorative desk top items like paperweights or letter openers (though not sharp or shaped for such use). Now, I think they would look beautiful arranged on a side table stacked on some books, or professionally framed for display on the wall.
